| Abstract/Contents: | "Effect of cool season N applications on root growth of bentgrass was studied under putting green conditions. Roots grew rapidly during fall and spring. Winter root growth was highest when N had been applied in October, October-December, or October-December-February. When N was not supplied or high rates were applied monthly, winter root growth was very low or even negative. It was suggested that the root growth reduction with the high rates of N fertilization could be associated with low carbohydrates since sugars needed for root growth were probably utilized in increased rates of N metabolism. Lack of winter root growth when N was not applied was associated with low metabolic activity." |
