Abstract/Contents:"A tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) sward was mowed to a stubble height of 5 or 10 cm when it had attained various heights to determine the effect of these two factors on yield. To determine the vertical location of the growth in the sward, successive layers were harvested from 7.5 cm to the ground level. Yield of forage was affected by forage height when cut rather than by stubble height; the higher the grass was permitted to grow before each clipping the more forage produced per year. Approximately 65% of the dry matter was found below the 5-cm level. The in vitro DMD of this forage was 30% compared to 60% for the higher layers. Ash content was not high enough from any layer to affect yield of forage quality."
