Abstract/Contents:Discusses the results of a study comparing soil-fertility levels in Kentucky bluegrass varieties. Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "nine varieties and experimental Kentucky bluegrass strains were included in a randomized-block design with 4 replications of 5 x 10-foot plots. Plots were seeded at 1 1/2 pounds per 1,000 square feet on an area fumigated with 1 pound of methyl bromide per 100 square feet. Fertilizer was applied at the following rates per 1,000 square feet: 40 pounds of 5-10-5 at planting and 2 pounds of nitrogen in spring and fall, annually." States that "the most interesting feature of these data is the excellent performance of Merion and Breeder Merion in the spring and fall of 1957 as contrasted with their mediocre showing in 1960. Turf quality of varieties damaged by Helminthosproium leafspot in the spring of 1960 showed a marked improvement by fall." Concludes that "nitrogen level, as shown in this test, has an important bearing on varietal performance. The results suggest the importance of making some provision to test new turfgrass species at more than one level of soil fertility."
