Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential methods of controlling winter annual weeds, recommending that they be targeted in their germination and seedling stages as opposed to late in the lifecycle. States that "the major annual grass is annual bluegrass, commonly referred to as Poa" which "has a lighter-green color than desirable turfgrasses" and "produces whitish seedheads in spring that most people find objectionable." Discusses winter annual broadleaf weeds, which have greater species diversity. States that "to target winter annual weeds with a preemergence product, the application should be made typically in August." Explains that applications of crabgrass preventers can be used to control winter annual weeds, and that "applications are generally made in mid-to late August, a period before the onset of Poa germination." Suggests mulching in ornamental beds for winter weed control, and mentions that "many of the same preemergence herbicides used in turf will also work in beds." States that "in turf, [managers] generally control broadleaf weeds with postemergence herbicides, generally combination products." Explains that control of winter annual broadleaf weeds in ornamentals relies on "mulching, hand-weeding and preemergence herbicides." Concludes that "preventing winter weeds from flowering and seeding will reduce infestations in future years."
