Abstract/Contents: | Details several potential turf management techniques for parks. Discusses choosing turf for different purposes, stating that perennial ryegrass is recommended for sports fields while Kentucky bluegrass is recommended for lower traffic areas. States that "a good turf maintenance program applies well-researched Best Maintenance Practices (BMPs) to establish turf grasses in parks and sports fields using methods that are not only cost-effective but also environmentally conscious." Recommends soil testing in order to develop a good soil profile as well as aeration to reduce compaction. States that the correct nitrogen/phosphorous/potassium (NPK) nutrient ratio in a fertilizer may help promote top growth, root growth, and total plant growth. Recommends seeding in the fall in combination with aerating and fertilizing as well as double seeding, or over-seeding, areas that get excessive wear. States that a customized Integrative Pest Management program (IPM) "provides a safer and often less costly option for effective pest management, resulting in less use of pesticides" and suggests that chemical control be used as a last resort. |
