Abstract/Contents:Profiles the Sports Turf Research Institute's (STRI) laser levelling and mapping service. States that the "surveying service was first used on a selection of flat bowling greens in the southeast of England. All of the tested greens had problems with smoothness/levels that were reducing bowl-to-surface performance." Presents a case study conducted at Cove Bowls Club "to help determine whether or not it was feasible to use a maintenance-only solution to their poor surface levels problem." Lists potential benefits of STRI's laser levelling and mapping service, including "improvement of surface playing quality"; "reduction in maintenance time where adjustments are needed"; "far greater accuracy"; "low cost in comparison to traditional survey companies"; and "can be combined with advisory visit for total green management." Concludes that "improving the quality of levels within bowling greens can be a difficult task. In extreme cases it is very difficult to know where and by how much alterations are needed. The laser levelling service...available from STRI in 2007 enables the club to achieve good quality results quickly, with a very good degree of accuracy. Whether using a maintenance-only or reconstruction route, evaulating the levels and mapping where inadequacies lie is a fundamentally important part of the process."
