Abstract/Contents:Discusses golfer expectations of golf course management, stating that "problems on the course must be overcome yesterday and...the dressed up golfing stanges beamed into...living rooms every week are the benchmark by which many are judged...[golfers] expect to play from perfect tees to perfect fairways and hole out on perfect greens." Suggests that "one of the reasons [greenkeepers] strive for perfection is because [they] believe [their] increased knowledge of soil and plant science compels [them] to." Suggests that "there is no correlation between active grass growth and good surfaces, indeed the best golfing surfaces in the UK [United Kingdom] can have very little grass on them...The best golfing grasses grow and compete in infertile but freely draining environments. This has been proven by years of research." States that "if a course needs to be in great condition to be played effectively then the design strategy is flawed." Concludes that "being realistic is important and at the same time [greenkeepers] must use [their] knowledge and expertise sensibly to maximise [maximize] the potential of what [they] have without destroying the Royal & Ancient game and its inherent character. This is what good greenkeeping is about - not creating perfection."
