Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to examine "the improvement and maintenance of fescue-dominated sward at Calne Bowls Club in Wiltshire [United Kingdom], where reduced inputs and maintenance have improved the bowling surface." Explains that "Calne Bowls Club had a failing green, previous maintenance regimes had affected levels and introduced ryegrass by mistake. Because there was some movement in one corner, the club considered digging up the green." Details the renovation process, stating that "the austere fertiliser [fertilizer] programme [program] is favoruing [favoring] the fescues as they cope with low fertility...Watering was kept to a minimum with two to three applications over the summer...[and] little disease has been seen on the green." States that "the green is solid tined, deep scarified, top dressed and overseeded with a 100% fescue seed mixture. The top dressing is carefully applied to build up low spots and not applied to high spots. Each year prior to renovation a basic laser survey is undertaken to assess the problem areas." Concludes that "the increase in fescue has been remarkable and reflects the inputs to the green. The only issue continues to be the levels and further longer term action may be necessary."
