Abstract/Contents:Discusses the role of integrated pest management in turfgrass management. Explains that "integrated pest management (IPM) is an approach to managing pests that focuses on long-term prevention or suppression with reduced risk to human and pet health, the environment and non-target organisms." Suggests potential cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical pest control methods. States that "fertilization is perhaps the most important cultural practice that affects insect pests. Organic fertilizers, such as turkey or chicken litter that are applied to turfgrass can attract green June beetle adults during the summer and result in significant grub damage." Concludes that "developing an IPM program...shouldn't be difficult, but it may take some time, extra education and effort. Probably all pests get out of balance at one time or another and need control, but the goal is to design and manage the turfgrass system with less pesticide use."
