| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses possible topdressing techniques, stating that "a well-developed, consistent topdressing program will allow [a superintendent] to experience the full benefits topdressing can offer, while avoiding the pitfalls that an ill-conceived program can create." Lists potential benefits of "a well-designed and implemented topdressing program": smoother, more level, and consistent playing surfaces; better thatch control; improved soil composition; improved conditions for rootzone development; improved rooting of stolons; and protecting crown development and maintenance. Offers suggestions for material selection, stating that "the sand preferred by most agronomists has 60 to 75 percent of its particles in a medium-sized (0.25mm [millimeter] to 0.75mm) range." Also offers suggestions for equipment selection. Concludes that "taking the time to evaluate [a course's] needs and develop a sound, consistent topdressing program that addresses those needs can pay big dividends in the long-term health, beauty and safety of [the] sports fields." |
