Abstract/Contents:Discusses the importance of wearing the personal protective equipment (PPE) during pesticide applications. States that "while pesticides can be safely used to control pests with minimal risk to human health, like drugs and natural chemicals, they have the potential to cause harm if abused or used incorrectly." Provides a list of possible PPE, including "basic PPE, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sock, shoes or rubber boots"; "safety glasses, goggles or face shields"; and "in some cases, respirators with appropriate chemical filter cartridges." States that "the risk associated with handling any chemical is a function of the inherent toxicity or hazard of the chemical and the exposure a person receives...to keep risk low, it is important to minimize these two factors as much as possible." Provides information on assessing risk, stating "the first part of the risk assessment process involves identifying the lowest NOEL (No Observed Effect Level) in the most sensitive species...the second part...involves determining the maximum human exposure." States that "if the chemical fails the risk assessment, additional PPE is used to reduce the exposure component." Explains a possible way to choose PPE, stating that "it must fit properly - especially respirators...dust masks, goggles, safety glasses and coveralls - and be comfortable under working conditions." Concludes that "fabrics are being developed that, like many of the new athletic fabrics worn today, will wick perspiration away from workers' bodies keeping them comfortable, while preventing spills and sprays from penetrating the fabric."
