Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential methods of white grub management, specifically in North Carolina. States that "the initial signs of white-grub infestation are a yellowing or thinning of turf that resembles drought stress. Large, irregular patches of dead turf will soon follow." Presents some possible management challenges, stating that white grubs "occur below ground, [so] infestations may go unnoticed until third instars have devoured the entire root system. In addition, because the grub is a full-grown third instar at this point, it may not be as susceptible to insecticide applications." Presents an experiment conducted to "develop a cost-effective management program for white grubs that will incorporate several different methods of control." Compares "three non-chemically based products for possible incorporation into [the] management regimen," includin milky spore bacteria, SulFer 95 and Surround® WP. Reports that the experiments "utilizing commercially formulated Milky Spore powder have shown this product to be ineffective in suppressing Japanese beetle grubs." Also reports that "multiple field trials have shown that the soil-amendment product SulFer 95 consistently reduced green June beetle grub populations by 50%."
