Abstract/Contents: | "Applications of silicon to turf have been shown to suppress a number of turf diseases. During the fall 2005, silicon (Excellerator, 12% silicon) was applied at eight rates ranging from 0 to 342 kg/m2 to a Floradwarf (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burrt Davy) green overseeded with rough bluegrass (P. trivialis cv. Wintergreen). In November, dollar spot caused by Sclerotinia homeocarpa started to appear and the number of spots that developed was counted every 3 days from 18 November to 9 December. Silicon was effective in suppressing dollar spot development with the highest rate providing the best suppression. For example, there was a 36% reduction in the incidence of dollar spots that developed between control and 342 kg/m2 of Excellerator. Similar observations were observed under greenhouse conditions where percent severity was based on the total turf area infected under a sqaure grid (cm2) Silicon significantly suppressed the AUDPC values and final percent dollar spot severity by 48% and 58% , respectively, in comparison to the non-amended control. In a subsequent study, final percent dollar spot severity was significantly suppressed by varying silicon rates between 17 to 28%. This information suggests that silicon could be useful in an integrated disease management program for managing dollar spot development in rough bluegrass." |
