Abstract/Contents:"Dollar spot, caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa is a disease of creeping bentgrass on golf course turf that diminishes turf quality, appearance and playability. Golf course superintendents rely on fungicides for dollar spot control. Information regarding fungicide efficacy is drawn from trials conducted in experimental field plots. Accuracy in evaluating treatments is essential for valid interpretation of fungicide performance. Traditional approaches for estimating disease severity include a variety of visual methods that often forfeit accuracy or are labor intensive. The objective of this project was to develop a field guide to improve the quality of visual estimates of dollar spot severity on golf course turf. A MATLAB application was used to generate images used in the field guide and to create a dollar spot appraisal training program. We also developed a logarithmic disease assessment scale to help expedite field plot evaluations while maintaining accuracy, especially at lower severity percentages. We believe that the accuracy and efficency of our dollar spot severity estimates are improved by using the logarithmic assessment scale, the field guide and training program."
