Abstract/Contents:Profiles nematodes (Phylum Nematoda) and their impact on turfgrass in Canada. Explains that most nematodes only survive in warmer climates but some nematodes do exist in Canada, including "the stunt nematode (Tylenchorhynchus spp.), the spiral nematode (Heliocotylenchus spp.), the ring nematode (Criconemella spp.), the lance nematode (Hopolaimus spp.), the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.), the cyst nematode (Heterodera spp.) and...the root gall nematode (Subanguina radicicola)." Details how to determine if nematode populations are at a damaging level. Concludes that "improving the health of [the] turfgrass - especially during the stressful summer months - will often help turf survive nematode infestations. Implement practices such as increasing...height of cut, decreasing wear on turf...proper water management and balanced fertility. These will all improve [the] turfgrass stand, improving its chance to thrive, even in the presence of high nematode populations."
