| Abstract/Contents: | Describes winter kill or winter injury, stating that it "can be caused by desiccation, crown hydration, freeze injury, anoxia and snow moulds." Defines desiccation "as the process of extracting water" and explains that turf injury occurs when the loss of water exceeds the uptake of water from the roots. Lists several methods to prevent winter desiccation, including "applying mulch or light topdressing on greens; covering greens with a synthetic permeable cover; [and] water greens in the winter." Explains that "freeze injury occurs when plants are subjected to extremely cold temperatures or a severe rapid drop in temperature." Suggests that golf course superintendents increase mowing height in the fall to prevent freeze injury. Also discusses anoxia "lack of oxygen", which occurs on turf under covers. Concludes that "winter injury is a complex physiological phenomenon and may occur as a result of and [an] interaction between the plant, soil, the micro-environment and the climate." |
