Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential methods of protecting wildlife habitats on golf courses, stating that "by implementing management practices to protect habitat areas, [superintendents can] ensure [their] course is providing sanctuary for wildlife in [their] region." States that "a habitat comprises four basic components: space, food, cover and water." Suggests that superintendents "make a list of wildlife species, unique native plants or natural habitats that should receive special attention in [their] habitat management plan." States that "wildlife, water and natural systems can be adversely affected when golfers inadvertently traipse through natural areas, maintenance practices are performed carelessly or improperly trained personnel fails to implement proper environmental safegaurds or sound management practices." Recommends that superintendents "create a vegetated buffer and 'no-spray' zone"; "stabilize banks and eliminate erosion"; "rope off areas"; "avoid distrubance to known nest or den sites"; "minimize traffic"; and "take out invansive species" for increased habitat protection. Suggests raising awareness about habitat protection by mounting signage at the course, communicating with golfers and homeowners, and educating maintenance workers.
