| Abstract/Contents: | "Mefluidide, N-(2, 4-dimethyl-5-((( trifluoromethyl) -sulfonyl) amino) -phenyl) acetamide, was developed for use in reducing maintenance costs of turved areas such as highway rights-of-way, airports, golf courses, and cemeteries. Five application rates of mefluidide were evaluated on four genotypes of Poa supina and two clonal genotypes and two seed lots of Poa annua grown in four-inch pots in a greenhouse at 18-21 C days and 10-13 C nights. Treatments were scored weekly for six weeks for vegetative growth, inflorescence number, leaf color, and rooting ability. Inflorescence counts were also recorded nine weeks after treatment. Vegetative suppression and seedhead inhibition varied widely among genotypes, seed lots, and species. Leaf color on treated plants was darker green than on control plants until lighter-colored regrowth occurred. Mefluidide had minimal detrimental effect on rooting. Acceptable results may be obtained at rates as low as 1/16 the recommended rate for vegetative suppression and/or seedhead inhibition." |
