Abstract/Contents: | "14C(U) sucrose incorporation into the insoluble organic acid, lipid, total sugar, and CO2 fractions following abscisic acid (ABA) induced cold acclimation of bromegrass (Bromus inermis L.) suspension cultures was studied. 14C(U) sucrose was administered on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 following 5.7 x 10-5M ABA treatment. Hardiness (LT50) in treated cells increased from -10C at day 1 to more than -28C by day 7, whereas control cells remained at -5C throughout this period. Water content of ABA treated cells decreased to 78% after 7 days while controls remained at 88%. Dry weight in ABA treated cells progressively increased to 55% above controls. ABA stimulated the partitioning of 14C(U) sucrose into the insoluble fraction by 65% over controls. Soluble fractions examined showed little difference between the controls and the ABA treated cells. Transmission electron micrographs and mineral nutrient profiles will also be presented." |
