Abstract/Contents: | "In bromegrass (Bromus inermis L.) cell suspension, ABA (7.5 x 10-5M) treatment increased frost tolerance from -5 C to -20 C in 4 days at +23 C. Ethylene production remained at a consistently low level throughout the 4 day treatment period. In contrast, ethylene production in non-treated control cells increased steadily following transfer. Reduction of flask ethylene levels, via inhibition of biosynthesis (AVG) and atmospheric scrubbing (Purafil), had a small but significant positive effect on hardiness levels. However, addition of ethylene to ABA treated cells did not affect frost tolerance." |
