Abstract/Contents:Presents a case study of renovations at The Links at Hope Island Resort on Hope Island, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, that converted degraded farmland to a golf course. Profiles the facility, stating that "Hope Island Resort is an integrated residential, resort and golfing facility situated on some 360 hectares of farmland on the flood plains of the Coomera River and Salt Water Creek, on Australia's Gold Coast." Details renovations, stating that "one of the first tasks was an engineering exercise to establish a drainage and flood control pattern by forming higher ground to shed water to a series of water courses...Essentially the Hope Island site was degraded compared with its pre-settlement bio-diversity of dry and estuarine woodlands." Explains that "considerable care was taken to develop plant associations that combine a diveristy of plants (some 55 species) into a sustainable wildlife habitat." Concludes that "the amount of wildlife present at Hope Island confirms the health of the ecosystem and the success of sound environmental practice with these woodlands and wetlands now a breeding ground for many of the native birds. The result sees golf harmonizing with nature and successfully acting as a catalyst for the reinstatement of a diversity of ecologies once prevalent in the area."
