States that "from an agronomic perspective, the early golf courses involved making subtle changes to the natural environment and taming the wild grasses...Development in golf course establishment and maintenance...has seen the introduction of many...grass varieties and very intensive methods of management." Explains that "with many of the...turf varieties requiring higher inputs of fertiliser [fertilizer], water and pesticides, and the players demanding 'picture perfect' turf, the costs of maintaining a golf course have increased considerably." Mentions that "the establishment of acceptable and measurable standards for golfing surfaces is...occuring so that the expected quality can be quantified, documented and enshrined into the policies of each club." Also mentions environmental concerns related to golf course management practices.
