Abstract/Contents:Profiles the Watermark sensor, designed to "overcome three principal disadvantages inherent in the electrical resistance method on soil water measurement": "lack of sensitivity in the wetter soil range"; "effect of salinity (electrolytes) on the readings"; and "short operating life." Concludes that "the Watermark sensor overcomes the principal limitation of the electrical resistance method of measuring soil water by providing readings over the entire soil water suction range desired in irrigated landscapes...The addition of the switching interface makes it possible to incorporate this soil moisture sensor in automatic landscape irrigation systems, to control individual valves or valve 'groups' irrigating a common water 'need.'"
