Abstract/Contents:Discusses the permit process for irrigation in Maryland and factors that effect water management. States that "Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) water use reports (1979-88) for the 45 golf courses required to report use were reviewed...A survey was conducted to determine those variables that may have affected water use at the selected courses." Explains that "the reported water use at each golf course was compared to the estimated seasonal irrigation water demand. Certain factors in golf course design (type of grass, soil, or irrigation system used) and irrigation management practice (overseeding), in addition to climatic conditions, appeared to control the relative amount of water used at each golf course." Reports that "bluegrass courses have a much higher irrigation water requirement than those using the other common, bent and rye, grasses."
