Abstract/Contents:Discusses golf course clubhouses, stating that "it was not until the formation of the 'Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers' and similar organisations [organizations] in the early 1700's that clubhouses as such came into existence." Explains that "intially many of these clubhouses were not located central to the course, adjacent to the 1st tee and overlooking the 18th green...Rather, they were mainly located on private land nearby, as in those times the courses themselves were generally on the common or links land and therefore available for pulic use." Describes factors that potentially make a good clubhouse, including functionality and character. Concludes that "the lesson from all of the direct and indirect experience in conceptual and detailed design of clubhouses is the need to keep an open mind in weighing up all of the influential elements that are crucial in the make-up of a clubhouse. To ignore or diminish the importance of each and all of these factors is to invite future problems."
