Abstract/Contents:In view of previous findings that sprays and granules, but not toxic baits, provided good control of Scapteriscus vicinus Scud. and S. acletus Rehn & Hebard, on pasture in Florida in the spring and that certain toxic baits were effective against nymphs in the summer, comparative tests were carried out in August 1975 with sprays, granules and baits on heavily infested Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) on a golf course in Jacksonville. Plots treated with sprays or granules were watered after treatment, and those treated with baits were watered immediately beforehand. All formulations of chlordane failed to give high mortality of S. vicinus (the only mole-cricket species found in this locality). In general, baits were more effective than sprays or granules; 2% bait formulations of malathion at 0.5 lb toxicant/acre, chlorpyrifos at 1 lb. propoxur at 1 lb and pirimiphos-ethyl at 2 lb gave excellent mortality rates, as did a 0.5% bait formulation of chlorpyrifos at 0.75 lb toxicant/acre. The only emulsion spray that gave excellent control was isazophos (ENT-29128) applied at 4 lb toxicant/acre, and at 2 lb/acre it gave moderate control, Carbofuran as 15% granules at 6 lb/acre and bendiocarb (Ficam) as an 80% wettable-powder spray at 0.5 lb toxicant/acre, gave moderate kill of mole-crickets. The remaining materials tested did not cause much mortality.
