Abstract/Contents:Discusses technological advances in vegetative establishment of turfgrass that may diminish the methods potential disadvantages, such as higher cost and labor demands, and lists the method's potential benefits, including "genetic uniformity of the cultivar, more rapid establishment in some species, and even conversion while still using the turf." Profiles the "big roll" sod harvester, which "harvests a roll of sod 42 inches wide and approximately 130 feet long", and states that "this sod roll can then be moves to the side and installed very quickly by a small crew." Describes another technology that involves "the rapid plugging of turf areas using a planter that will accept either conventional sod or even the 'big rolls' of sod", and states that "this device takes the vegetative sod, chops is up, and drops it on the ground, green side up." Also details the "use of a Cushman 30-06 turf aerator to harvest and plant 2-inch diameter turf plugs", and states that "this aerator will harvest up to 38,000 plugs per hour and then can be used to make the holes to replant the plugs."
