Abstract/Contents:Discusses cultivation programs for golf courses, stating that "formulation of a...program depends upon (a) determining the soil physical problem(s) and their spatial location"; "(b) selection of appropriate cultivation technique(s) that will correct the problems and are economically possible"; "(c) proper timing and frequency of cultivation...and (d) continual adjustment of the program based on evaluation of results." Lists soil physical conditions that limit water use efficiency and turf quality, including "surface soil compaction, a soil profile with high soil strength and any layering within a profile." Discusses studies funded by the United States Golf Association (USGA) between 1987 and 1992 "to evaluate 10 different cultivation methods and several cultivation programs involving more than one procedure." Reports that "all cultivation methods...improved deep root growth of bermudagrass and deep water extraction by plant roots"; "the combination of hollow tine coring plus Verti-drain cultivation provided the highest deep water extraction"; "injection of lime by the Turf Conditioner improved the base saturation and deep water extraction" and "several methods demonstrated a tendency for hard pan formation below the depth of tine penetration."
