Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the testing of a golf course's irrigation source water to determine "the elements and the concentration of these elemements in [the] irrigation water", stating that "soil will take on the characteristics of the...water source over time." Discusses historical soil tests, stating that "they allow the superintendent to see the evolving picture, of the quality...concerning the balance of nutrients." States that a digression in soil quality is often "the result of the sodium and/or bicarbonate levels in the irrigation water." Discusses options for correcting a severe water quality problem, including changing to a higher quality source of water, chemically treating the existing water, or a "comprehensive program based upon the addition of proper corrective nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium." Describes the potential advantages, disadvantages, and considerations for each option, noting that "the most important objective of any soil management program should be to achieve the correct proportional balance of nutrients available to the plant." |
