Abstract/Contents:Discusses the patent application process in the United States, stating that "after the conception of a device or new process...a search of the files on the United States Patent Office will usually have to be made to determine where a device is unprecedented." Describes the sections of the patent application, which includes "a short abstract of a the invention"; "several drawings, made to patent office specifications"; "background of the invention, citing previous patents or 'prior art'"; "a description of the drawings with the embodiments of the invetnions"; and "the claims...very precisely written and [stating] what is trully unique to the device or process." Explains that "once a patent is received...it receives a serial number and a filing date" and "placed on a waiting list...This waiting period may be as long as 1.5 to two years." Mentions that "no true protection exists until a patent is issued."
