Abstract/Contents:Discusses the potential advantages and disadvantages of using effluent water as an irrigation source. States that while "it can contain a high degree of nitrogen", "zinc, copper and boron are...[also] quite abundant in effluent material", causing "a twofold effect where not only are you adding heavy metals to the soil, but...at the same time raising the soil pH that will in time create a toxic situation for the turfgrass plant." Describes how "the DER [Department of Environmental Resources] and water management districts have joined forces to push the utility companies into creating reuse plans for their wastewater." Discusses a system operated by Collier Country Utlities, stating that "the golf courses on their contracts pay between four and ten cents per thousand gallons." Details some of the issues regarding effluent water, including the the millions of dollars in land, pump stations, pipeline, and sprinkler heads that proponents are willing to use for this disposal effort.
