Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of zoysiagrass on golf courses, explaining that its "low fertility and water requirements, when compared to alternative turfgrasses, plus its inherent cold tolerance, have created [an] interest particularly in the transition zone of the United States." Reports that "advancements in seed germination technology applied to Zoysia japonica through the use of germinating enhancing chemicals have improved seed germination to better than 70 percent." Discusses row planting, in which "shredded sod is introduced into small slits in the fairways." Explains that "strip sodding is the process whereby commercially produced Zoysia sod is cut at a particular depth or thickness, and an equivalent cut of sod is made in the fairway where Zoysia is to be installed." Suggests that "for those wishing the quickest cover by zoysiagrass, the ultimate approach is through sodding." Concludes that "once established, zoysiagrasses generally require two to three pounds of nitrogen per year, low water and cutting heights that range from three-eighths inch to one-half inch, depending upon such things as where the species is established, and traffic and shade conditions."
