| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses Poa annua control, stating that "after considering the characteristics, plus the advantages and disadvantages of Poa annua, one must concede that it is not a desirable grass species if one is anxious to obtain a permanent and reliable stand of turf." Explains that "in the early years the solution was thought to be to maintain a high acidity, which discouraged the growth of Poa annua in fine turf" and that "this was followed by the arsenical era when sodium arsenite, lead arsenates and calcium arsenite were used extensively." States that "many superintendents went to the formidable undertaking of completely stripping sod off fairways, followed by overseeding." Concludes that "today [superintendents] have a whole new array of turf growth regulators and suppressors, even to the extent of a fungicide/herbicide product -- all promising rays of hope for Poa annua control." |
