Abstract/Contents:Discusses the role pH plays on a soil test, explaining that "how it reacts to different conditions and substances is extremely important to understand if one is going to make a comprehensive recommendation." Suggests that "in organic soils in particular the pH should not be too high, for these soils are by nature poor in a number of plant nutrients whose availability is suppressed by high pH conditions." Explains that "generally, in the low pH range (<5.5) fungi dominate in the soil and in the rhizosphere, whereas at high pH levels the bacteria are more abundant." Mentions that "results of a salt pH test will usually be lower than that of a water pH." Explains that a buffer pH test "is a test used to estimate the buffering capacity of a soil, which in turn will provide insight into how much lime a soil will need to raise the pH to a certain level."
