Abstract/Contents:"Recently published performance standards were used to interpret playing quality data for ball rebound resilience, ball roll, traction and hardness. The data were collected over a three year period from 16 rootzone materials, formed from a combination of four mixing ratios (1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2 and 0:1) of sandy loam soil to sand, with four sand types. The trial was subjected to simulated football-type wear. Rootzones with <90% sand had a high incidence of unacceptably soft conditions with low ball rebound resilience and rapid ball deceleration. These problems were infrequent on high specification sand-soil mixes and did not occur on the pure sand rootzones. Rootzones with a high sand content did have a greater incidence of hard ground conditions, although rootzone mixes with a high soil content could also be unacceptably hard in dry conditions. The incidence of traction values below the preferred limit of 30 Nm was similar for all rootzone materials but on medium-coarse sand rootzone there were 10 instances out of 38 sampling events when the surface was classified as too unstable for acceptable playing conditions. This high failure rate was not recorded on the finer sand materials."
