Abstract/Contents: | "Lolium perenne L. turf grown on sixteen different sand and sand-soil rootzone materials was subjected to three seasons of simulated football-type wear and changes in soil physical characteristics were monitored. Before wear all the materials had water infiltration rates >10 mm h-1. After two seasons of wear infiltration rates on materials with <90% sand were only 1 mm h-1 and surface ponding of water was frequent. Even the most free-draining sand-soil mix had an infiltration rate of only 5 mm h-1. The pure sand constructions gave good infiltration rates throughout the study, although on average they fell from 395 mm h-1 in October 1984 to 165 mm h-1 in April 1987. Total porosity was lowest at the 50-100 mm depth but there was no consistent variation with the different rootzone materials. However, for air-filled porosity all the sand-soil mixes had values at or close to zero in wet weather and only the pure sand plots sustained values above 10%. There was an increase in surface organic matter content, especially on the sand rootzones, but heavy applications of top dressing appeared to have kept the build up of organic matter under control. |
