Abstract/Contents:"The effect of depths of heavy loam ranging 0-300 mm and the influence of gravel base material where examined. For a management regime which excluded heavy rolling or the use of covers neither the depth of heavy loam nor the base material had any significant effect on surface hardness or ball rebound resilience. There was, however, some evidence of greater soil cracking as the depth of the heavy soil increased. Hardness and rebound were influenced by soil moisture content and it is suggested that the drainage and moisture retention properties of cricket square soils should be considered, especially when covers are not available.
