Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the use of compost tea on golf courses and potential health hazards. Defines compost tea as "soluble organic compounds and some fine particulates derived from water flowing through the compost." States that "there are definitely microorganisms in compost tea...[but] it is very unlikely that incidental contact with areas that have been treated with compost tea will result in illness." Mentions that "oral ingestion of compost tea could be undesirable, unpleasant, and perhaps even hazardous but most people would choose to avoid this practice." States that "the organisms in compost tea could include members of the Aspergillus sp. and other fungi that are important in the compost process, but potentially can cause respiratory related infections in susceptible individuals...Inhalation by golfers of fungi derived from compost tea is probably less than from other activities such as gardening." |
