Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the par 5 14th hole on the Old Course at St. Andrews, known as "Long Hole In"; "Elysian Fields"; and "Hell". Describes the hole, a 30 metre [meter] strip of fairway, between the fearsome four bunker complex known as the Beardies and the stone wall, is the preferred target from the championship tee, although the conservative player can play left of the Beardies, but this is the long way home." Describes the changes of Hell Bunker, stating that "examination of photographs of Hell from the 1960's and 1970's indicate a steady progression towards a more formalised [formalized] shape, as each time the revetted facing was replaced with fresh sods, the character and shape of the bunker was slightly altered." |
