Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the European crane fly (ECF) Tipula paludosa and the Marsh crane fly (MCF) Tipula oleracea, "the two most desctructive species [of crane flies] to turfgrass." Explains that "the ECF and MCF are hard to distinguish in the field and consequently an entomologist is needed to confirm the species. The adults of both species look like a 'giant mosquito' and are often observed shortly after sunset on the walls of houses." Discusses potential control methods of crane flies, stating that "chemical insecticides are currently registered for control of crane flies in Canada. Carbaryl and chlorpyrifos are labelled [labeled] to control both ECF and MCF." Also states that "biological control agents such as entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) have shown good virulence against ECF larvae in laboratory tests." |
