| Abstract/Contents: | It was found in investigations in grassland in Northern Ireland in 1971-72 that elimination of shoot-fly larvae increased grass yields in the September-May feeding period. Increases were usually less than 10%, but in one case where growth was abnormally slow the increase was over 30%, and in another where the larval population was atypically densi it was almost 60%. The effects of damage were not cumulative during the feeding period, and at the end of this period, plots that had been treated with dimethoate at 4.5 kg/ha sometimes gave lower yields than untreated plots. Fertilizer increases had a much greater effect on yield than did control of Dipterous larvae. When turf containing shoot-fly larvae was ploughed, Oscinella spp. reestablished themselves more successfully than others in seedling rye-grass (Lolium perenne), but did not damage the new sward appreciably. |
