Abstract/Contents:Briefly discusses the need to understand temperature relationships in the microenvironment of a turf stand. Heat dissipation, heat stress, transpiration, and the effects of irrigation on tiller temperature are included. Describes the microclimate field station at Pennsylvania State University, constructed in 1978. The station monitored several environmental parameters including temperature under different climactic conditions using very small thermocouples. Authors concluded the temperature in the basal area of the plant has a significant effect on the way that plant responds to management, and plant temperature cannot always be predicted from air temperature. Also, by maintaining an adequate soil moisture supply, turfgrasses have an increased capability for heat dissipation through transpiration and soil heat conduction.
