Abstract/Contents: | Describes the results of an experiment carried out between 1974-1981 to ascertain the effectiveness of varying fertilizer types (salt fertilizer, organic mineral fertilizer, and three slow release fertilizers: urea condensate, plastique coated and sulphur coated) on the health of the grasses, and to determine any differences in performance in the diverse weather conditions throughout the course of the year. The experimental plots were 10m2 in size, and in addition to the plots testing fertilizers there was one more that received no fertilizers. The grasses were clipped eight times a year. Although the results proved that all fertilizers tested augmented the overall quality of the grasses (improved root density, lower weed infestation, stronger, londer lasting growth period), certain important differences manifested themselves. The sulphur coated slow release fertilizer had the most immeadiate effect, the urea condensate the weakest effect, but the plastique coated slow release demonstrated to be the longest lasting of them all, producing the highest levels of growth over an extended period. The urea condensate allowed for a 20% weed infestation, while the salt fertilizer kept such infestation to below 5%. As to the effects of weather, it was determined that moist conditions are more favorabe to denser roots and fewer weeds, unfertilizer grasses in particlarly suffering during warmer, dryer years. However, the weather had little effect on the performance of the fertilizers, which continued to improve the grass quality. If anything, their influence was lessened slightly. Generally, mineral fertilizers provide the fastest, best results, but when combined properly with organic fertilizers, it is ppossible to practically negate any effects that weather has upon the turf grasses. |
