Abstract/Contents:The biology of Stenodiplosis bromicola Marikovskii & Agafonova is closely related to the development of the florets of its food-plant, smooth bormegrass (Bromus inermis). Eggs are laid on the distal end of the inner surface of the palea as soon as the panicle begins to emerge in spring. In investigations in Nebraska during 1966-67 on the relation between infestation and palea length, examination of field-collected panicles showed that the palea was shortest in infested florets, longest in uninfested ones, and intermediate in those infested later in the development cycle (as in the case of florets containing diapausing larvae), suggesting that infestation prevented the palea from elongating fully. Greenhouse studies indicated that resistant lines with a long palea probably do not exist.
