Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential water management concerns, stating that "water management concerns...are focused more on 'through the green' areas than on green and tee surfaces, and really can be considered two-fold. First, it's about producing firm and fast playing conditions. Secondly, it's about better managing one of earth's most precious resources." Describes "living on the edge" water management, stating that "living on the edge management is about providing the turfgrass plant with enough water to maintain health, but not enough to become so lush and succulent that it hampers playability. The edge can deliver the best of both worlds." Mentions possible disadvantages to living on the edge water management, stating that "the biggest and most important concern for the superintendents is job security...Brown grass can generate a pink slip much faster than green." Suggests communicating with "an owner, GM [general manager] or board [because] they must be educated that a balanced water management strategy that provides great playing conditions through most of the season might occasionally go over the edge." Concludes that "no matter how [one lives] on the edge, or what the color of [the] turfgrass rainbow is, the fact remains [all superintendents] need to use less of of that most precious of...natural resources, water. But by using less, [superintendents] can do more!"
