Abstract/Contents:Field studies were carried out in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, in 1968-70 on thrips infesting grasses grown for seed. Anaphothrips obscurus (Mull.), Aptinothrips rufus (Gmel.), A. stylifer Tryb. and Rhipidothrips brunneus Williams, either alone or in combination, caused economic injury. Anaphothrips is a highly mobile and destructive pest and has a high reproductive potential in favorable conditions. Although the cultural practice of burning fields to kill plant pathogens reduces the number of overwintering thrips, the survivors may cause economic injury in the following year. Relatively small numbers of overwintering thrips occurring in certain grasses in early spring cause a type of silvertop by feeding on the inflorescence within the leaf sheath, which reduces the seed yield. After the heads have emerged from the leaf sheaths, the thrips move to the protected environment of the lower leaves and do little damage to the heads. The number of thrips that develop under favorable conditions after the heads have emerged from the leaf sheaths can destroy 1/2 to 1/3 of the leaves, and this undoubtedly further reduces the quality and yield of seed.
