Abstract/Contents:Discusses fuel management on golf courses, stating that "many risk management experts...identify fuels (gasoline, diesel, used oils...as the greatest risk to manage on the golf course." States that petroleum "spills and leaks are of significance to all Canadians because of the environmental and human health damage they can cause. Statistically, releases of petroleum products from storage tank systems are responsible for approximately two-thirds of the soil contamination on affected sites in Canada." Provides a list of environmental risks faced by golf courses, including "improper storage of fuels and lubricants"; "gradual contamination of soil, groundwater, surface waters and storm water runoff"; and "spills from portable aboveground storage tanks." Explains the government legislation related to fuel management, as well as the environmental codes of practice. Mentions various design and operational considerations, including "storing fuel away from vegetation and buildings"; and "[having] a health and safety and emergency response plan...with a fuel management section and train staff in same." Concludes that "proper fuel management is one of the most important tasks of a superintendent to minimize risk to the environment and human health and safety...with proper planning and knowledge of regulations in [one's] area, this important practice does not have to be time consuming or expensive."
