Abstract/Contents:Presents possible best management practices (BMPs) for water management, stating that "the goal is to provide turf with the right amount of water when it is needed and at the lowest cost and the least impact on the environment." Discusses the relationship between turfgrass and water, and soil and water, stating that "the amount of water a plant needs is influenced by soil particle size, soil particle size distribution (soil classification) and root zone depth." Highlights potential important aspects of soil, including infiltration rate and its available water. Also discusses irrigation system performance, stating that "in order to irrigate efficiently, [one] must have an irrigation system that is performing properly...An irrigation audit will ensure that all sprinkler heads are level and that the pressure is relatively uniform." Presents an irrigation checklist, highlighting "the information and/or equipment needed to be able to apply the right amount of water to turf," including to "determine soil texture of each irrigated field"; "make note of the infiltration rate"; and "calculate plant available water = available water x root zone depth."
