Abstract/Contents:"The dependence of the biomass production upon the size of the assimilating area of Medicago sativa L. and Trifolium pratense L. was confirmed. However, this dependence was not linear in all the cuttings; in Medicago sativa and tetraploid Trifolium pratense the optimum values of the leaf area index (LAI) were 5 to 6 m2/m2 and 4 to 5 m2/m2, respectively. In the second cutting, the highest production of both species was obtained when LAI was smaller by 1 m2/m2 than that of the first cutting. In M. sativa and tetraploid T. pratense the maximum assimilating area (leaves and stems) was 19.06 m2/m2 and 18.65 m2/m2, respectively, with LAI of 62 to 63%. The harvest of M. sativa carried out during flowering increased the value of LAI; however, as compared with harvest during budding, this increase in productivity was not significant. Lower values of LAI and lower biomass production in diploid T. pratense cut during flowering suggested that the harvest should not be carried out at this developmental stage. In the tetraploid form of T. pratense, maximum LAI and maximum production were found after the harvest carried out at the beginning of flowering."
