Abstract/Contents:"Interspecific and intergeneric hybridization of Festuca pratensis (2n = 14) × Festuca arundinacea (2n = 42), Lolium multiflorum (2n = 14) × Festuca arundinacea (2n=42), and Festuca pratensis (2n = 28) × Lolium multiflorum (2n = 28) has been performed since 1971. From the largely sterile F1 (2n = 28) of the crosses with Festuca arundinacea partly fertile progenies with 2n = 56 chromosomes were obtained after colchicine treatment of seedling plants in their two- to three-leaf stage. For testing plant fertility - fertility being expressed by the number of plants that emerged per defined seed quality - pollen staining is rather unsuitable an approach as in the individual plants no sufficiently close correlation exists between staining and seed setting. For improving the quality characters of the hybrids, the latter were backcrossed with diploid and tetraploid Lolium multiflorum and Festuca pratensis, respectively. Preliminary yield tests applied to the progenies from Festuca pratensis × Lolium multiflorum have shown that the best progenies would reach the performance of Lolium multiflorum in their first year of use and they would even exceed that level in their second year. The performance of Lolium hybridum is exceeded by some of the progenies in both years of use."
